Victoria’s Shrinking Phonebook

In a sign of ‘out with the old and in with the new,’ the recently pressed Greater Victoria phone book has shrunk, once again. With a reduction of over one hundred yellow pages, the phone book now comes in at 1,183 total pages.

The reason behind the cold-water phenomenon is… you guessed it, the glorious Internet. More and more companies are turning their back on print and investing their entire marketing budget on digital media. Google is the new phonebook and every company with a website wants to direct traffic to their page.

But as more companies vie for the top spot and do every thing in their power to increase their web presence, the opposite is happening with personal information. Security fears, online predators and cyber stalking has lead to a decrease in the amount of personal information the average citizen publicly discloses.

This is another reason for the thinner phonebook. Companies like Telus are encouraging their customers to remove their numbers from phonebooks to limit the amount of tele-spam they receive. Even at bars, some young adults would rather give their Facebook profile then share their phone number. It’s a sign of the times, a paperless world, where all our business and correspondence is done electronically.

Glad we’re in the mattress business and not the pulp and paper business.
