The Art Gallery of Greater Victoria is hosting a new exhibition that features work from one of the West Coast’s most influential artists, Emily Carr. The exhibition is titled “On the Edge of Nowhere.” This phrase refers to a quote by Carr herself, who described her hermit like existence as an “isolated little old woman on the edge of nowhere.”
The nowhere Carr speaks of became a very real location in her paintings.
Her work helped Western Canadians connect with the First Nation art that surrounded them. It also developed a pride for the Pacific Northwest landscape that continues to penetrate the hearts of British Columbians to this day.
Carr was born and died in Victoria. The art she made in between will always be the art from which Western Canada found its own form and significance.
The art gallery will be hosting a drop in tour this Saturday at 2:00.
-”Be careful that you do not write or paint anything that is not your own, that you don’t know in your own soul.” -Emily Carr
