Dreams are inherently hard to describe to another. They are personal outpourings of emotion and images. Sometimes they leave us questioning reality. Sometimes we wish they would go on forever.
Hollywood has often sought to transfer the fleeting subconscious to film. The dream has been used as a cheesy tie-up device, an integral plot element and a setting for breathtaking visuals.
Here is a list of some of our favourite films involving dreams:
1.Wizard of Oz
-Dorothy travels to a fabulous realm and embarks on a quest to help three friends find the missing pieces to their characters. The inner conflict is resolved when Dorothy eventually comes to the conclusion that there is, no place like home. The dream world is denied.
2. Jacob’s Ladder
-A sci-fi dream picture about a Vietnam soldier suffering from post-traumatic stress.
3. Waking Life
-The main character moves through a dream and discusses the intimacies of life with random strangers. Using an animation style known as rotoscope, the visuals are presented in a flowing comic book style wash of colour and line. This is a beautiful picture.
4. Donnie Darko
-A cult hit with the younger crowd, Donnie Darko features a mutant rabbit prognosticator who foretells the end of the world. It includes great performances from Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal, as well as the late Patrick Swayze.
5. Inception
Still in theatres, Inception is an epic dream film. We won’t say anymore. Go see it. Right now. Seriously.
If you have any others you would like to include, please comment.
