Journal writing is always good for the soul. It connects you with your thoughts, makes you reexamine the day’s activities and helps you organize your future.
Keeping a dream journal can be equally as rewarding.
When you sleep, your subconscious is engaging in many of the activities mentioned above. Your brain processes the information you took in during the course of your day.
When you record your dreams, you make a record of the information your brain chose to review during your sleep. Rereading your record later in the day or at another date, helps you form clues as to the ideas, emotions and events that your subconscious is trying to tackle. This can be important information for personal reflection or for sharing with a friend or psychologist.
The first step in keeping a dream journal is purchasing a notebook. Once you have one, find a place within arms length of your bed where you can keep it safely. Establishing a consistent spot is important.
When you start recording, make sure to date your entries. Keeping a mini calendar close can help you.
Try not to worry about spelling or grammar. Allow yourself to write freely, in a continued stream of consciousness.
Many dream journal enthusiasts suggest writing in the present tense. This places you in the memory and gives the subconscious experience more weight.
If you are a more visual person, try to sketch images of your experiences.
After compiling at least a half dozen entries, start looking for reoccurring themes. Is there a location that you often find yourself in? Is there a reoccurring character? Is there an emotion that overwhelms the action?
When you have finished your search for themes, give your dream a title.
Finally, include a separate notation on issues you may be facing in your conscious life. This will help you identify symbols that may reoccur over time.
